Partial Birth Abortion

The 2003 bill that banned partial birth abortion was a bill that shocked most pro-choice individuals. This bill banned physicians from performing abortions on women past the second trimester. A pregnancy in the 3rd trimester can live outside of the mother’s womb, when a partial birth abortion is performed; it is a grave crime against the fetus which in my opinion has intrinsic value. According to the federal Born-Alive Infants Protection law enacted in 2002: a "live birth" occurs when the baby is (1) all the way outside the mother, even if the cord is still attached, and (2) displays any respiration, heartbeat, or movement of voluntary muscles, when the baby is pulled and killed to prevent it from surviving, it is referred to as an unjust act against a human being.

I have always been middle of the road when it comes to abortion, I always say it is a woman’s right to do as she sees fit when it comes to her body because I would not want the  rights of a woman to be taken away. I would not be able to ethically justify trumping the rights of a woman for a fetus. After reading a few excerpts on partial birth abortion, my views on this procedure have changed entirely on the matter. This practice is morally wrong and it is destroying the life a fetus prior to birth. I cannot even begin to argue how the practice of delivering a newborn child alive, feet first, and holding it in the birth canal squirming, while the back of its head is stabbed with a suction device is evil.

I can understand the reasons why certain women choose abortions. Certain women would take the morning after pill, to prevent the egg from forming into the ovum due birth control (contraceptive) failure. A few do it to end an unwanted pregnancy. A few make this decision to prevent the birth of a child with birth defects or severe medical problems. Such defects are often unknown until routine second-trimester tests are done. The other group would make this decision due to pregnancy resulting from rape or incest. And a small group will be due to physical or mental conditions that endanger the woman's health if the pregnancy is continued.

When the above reasons are not factors into the decision making, I wonder why a doctor and a mother would consider committing such crime against an unborn child on the second trimester when there are many other live options available to her. This is an issue of ethical obligations and the way we treat a human being. I have concluded in my opinion that a fetus in its 2nd trimester is a human being and therefore second trimester abortions are not morally justifiable and therefore both of the people involved in this act should be prosecuted under the law. It is unethical to abort conscious fetuses; it is not unethical to abort preconscious fetuses because unconscious fetuses deserve no protection because no one knows if they will eventually become conscious. An abortion of this nature should only take place to protect the life of the mother, because once the fetus develops into a human being it should have all of the rights of an adult, and therefore the woman's right to terminate should end.
